The Kenya Red Cross Nairobi Branch has reported that two fires on Sunday night, October 13, 2024, affected approximately 20 households in Nairobi.
The first incident occurred at around 8:05 p.m. in Riverside Village, Viwandani, where the Nairobi City County (NCC) disaster management team and the Community-Based Disaster Response Team (CBDRT) responded promptly. By 9:47 p.m., the fire had been contained, but it had already impacted 20 homes.
In an update, the Red Cross stated, “Viwandani, Riverside Fire Update: Fire has been contained by the Nairobi Fire Brigade alongside the Community-Based Disaster Response Team.
Approximately 20 households have been affected.”
This is the second fire incident reported in Viwandani in recent weeks, with a previous fire occurring on September 16, 2024.
Later on Sunday night, at around 10:04 p.m., another fire broke out near the Jua Kali junction in Shauri Moyo.
The Red Cross and CBDRT teams were on the scene to contain the blaze, with updates provided as the situation developed.
A similar fire incident had taken place in Shauri Moyo near Burma Market on September 10, affecting two businesses but resulting in no casualties.
Recent months have seen an increase in fire incidents across Nairobi, prompting the Red Cross to organize fire safety training sessions for local communities.
For instance, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja recently assessed the aftermath of a fire that damaged properties on Desai Road, Ngara, on September 2.
Sakaja’s visit aimed to review the county’s disaster response and explore ways to support affected traders.
Other fires in Nairobi include a September 19 incident in the Muslim area of Kawangware, a September 14 fire in Jua Kali Green Corner, Embakasi, which destroyed 24 homes, and an August 29 outbreak near Chokmatt supermarket in Umoja 3.
With fires becoming more frequent, Nairobi’s disaster management teams continue to prioritize readiness and community-based response efforts.
