Ugandan authorities reported on Sunday that they had apprehended a 28-year-old man while he was attempting to enter a church in the capital city, Kampala, carrying an explosive device with the intention of using it for an attack.
The police were actively searching for three other individuals believed to have been dispatched on similar bombing missions in different parts of Uganda, according to law enforcement officials.
Although the motives behind these actions remained unclear, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an organization linked to the Islamic State (IS), had previously executed deadly bomb attacks in Uganda.
Originally, the ADF was a rebel group operating within Uganda.
However, more than two decades ago, they were defeated and forced to retreat into the jungles of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where they have maintained their base ever since.
The individual in custody has been identified as Kintu Ibrahim.
He was apprehended just as he was about to enter the Lubaga Miracle Centre, a Pentecostal church located in the Lubaga suburb of south Kampala.
According to Patrick Onyango, the police spokesperson, security personnel had received intelligence regarding planned attacks on places of worship, and they had successfully tracked down Ibrahim.
“We received information that a terrorist had already been dispatched to carry out a mission, so we pursued the terrorist,” Onyango explained.
He went on to reveal that the suspect was in possession of a bag containing an improvised explosive device, which was safely neutralized by the police.
During the subsequent interrogation, Onyango stated that Ibrahim had admitted to having three accomplices who had also been tasked with carrying out similar attacks.
“He is assisting us in locating these individuals,” Onyango added, confirming that the suspect was being held on charges related to terrorism.
