UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has revealed that the United Kingdom will be providing more help to the people of Gaza.
They’re sending an extra £20 million (which is about $24 million) in aid.
This is to support the civilians affected by the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
This new contribution increases the total aid pledged to Palestinian territories to £30 million after they gave £10 million last week in response to the recent crisis.
The conflict began when Hamas militants entered Israel from the Gaza Strip, resulting in significant loss of life.
Hamas’s attack led to the deaths of over 1,400 people, with the majority being civilians.
Israeli officials report that these civilians were either shot, mutilated, or burned to death on the first day of the attack.
In retaliation, Israel launched intense bombings across the Gaza Strip, causing the deaths of more than 5,000 Palestinians, primarily civilians, according to the latest information from the Hamas health ministry in Gaza.
Prime Minister Sunak stated, “We are providing an additional £20 million of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, more than doubling our previous support to the Palestinian people.”
Before these recent pledges, the UK had already committed £27 million to support Palestinians this year.
Sunak made this announcement while updating the parliament on his recent visit to the Middle East.
He emphasized, “We need a constant stream of aid pouring in, bringing the water, food, medicine, and fuel that is so desperately needed.”
Furthermore, Sunak informed Members of Parliament that the UK government had analyzed the tragic explosion at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza.
This explosion resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people last Tuesday.
While both Hamas and Israel had blamed each other for the incident, the UK government, after careful consideration of available evidence, believes that the explosion was likely caused by a missile launched from within Gaza towards Israel.
It’s worth noting that France’s DRM military intelligence agency had also stated that there was no evidence to suggest that the explosion was caused by an Israeli strike.
