A group of Members of Parliament from the Mt. Kenya region, who initially backed the motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has reversed their position.
MPs Geoffrey Wandeto (Tetu), Rahab Mukami (Nyeri), and Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni) have announced they will no longer pursue efforts to remove Gachagua from office.
Rahab Mukami explained, “After careful consideration and reflecting on the motion, I realized that this matter should be resolved between our Deputy President and the President.
Kenya is bigger than any one of us, and I’ve heard from the people of Nyeri they do not want the Deputy President removed.”
Geoffrey Wandeto echoed this sentiment, stating, “When we consult our constituents, they prioritize other issues over impeachment.
As their representatives, we must heed their concerns.
Therefore, I will be voting NO on Tuesday.”
This shift comes just a day after these MPs were mentioned in Parliament as supporters of the motion to impeach Gachagua.
Instead of continuing with the impeachment process, they advocate for a dialogue to reconcile the Deputy President with the President.
Mukami urged, “Deputy President, please approach the President and seek forgiveness.
Mr. President, sit down with your Deputy, discuss, and reach an understanding.”
Meanwhile, some MPs from Gachagua’s stronghold remain in favor of the impeachment, including Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Wambugu Wainaina (Othaya), and Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town).
Additionally, Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki has also retracted her support for the motion, stating in a letter that she withdrew after consulting with her constituents.
