Students and staff at the University of Nairobi who rely on university kitchens for meals must now make payments through the e-Citizen platform.
This requirement stems from a directive issued by the Kenya Kwanza government, mandating that all payments to the university be processed through the government’s online portal.
A memo circulated by the university a week ago outlined the procedures for making payments.
According to the memo, which was disseminated by the Vice Chancellor through the corporate affairs office and obtained by Citizen Digital, individuals are directed to utilize the E-Citizen platform for all transactions with the university.
To facilitate payments, users are instructed to utilize pay bill number 222222. Upon initiating payment, users must enter the Outlet/Live identifier in capital letters, followed by a hyphen, and their name (e.g., NUK1-name) as the account number.
Detailed instructions for payment were provided for different kitchens across the main campus and satellite campuses within Nairobi.
These directives coincide with the government’s recent transition of all its services to the e-Citizen platform.
This platform now serves as the primary gateway for accessing government services, with users required to pay nominal administrative fees per transaction.
The fee structure, outlined by Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u in a gazette notice from December 2023, is as follows:
- Transactions below Sh.199 will incur a fee of Sh.5
- Transactions between Sh.200 and Ksh.299 will incur a fee of Sh.10
- Transactions between Sh.300 and Ksh.499 will incur a fee of Sh.15
- Transactions between Sh.500 and Ksh.699 will incur a fee of Sh.20
- Transactions between Sh.700 and Ksh.999 will incur a fee of Sh.25
Transactions over Sh.1000 will incur a fee of Sh.50, with any dollar amount converted to US dollars at the current exchange rate (approximately Sh.156).
These measures signify a significant shift towards digital payment systems for university services, in alignment with broader governmental initiatives to streamline administrative processes and enhance efficiency.
