The Elimu Bora Working Group is urging Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to immediately halt the Form One selection process until an independent evaluation of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) 2023 results is conducted and validated.
Expressing their concerns at a press conference on November 28, the group highlighted reported discrepancies in the KCPE results and errors noted since the release on November 23.
The group emphasized the potential violation of pupils’ rights due to tampered results, urging the suspension of processing until an independent validation is conducted to prevent exacerbating the situation.
In a move to address the issue urgently, the rights group has taken legal action to halt the ongoing Form One selection and restore integrity to National Examinations.
The Elimu group pointed out various issues, including delayed results with code 40054 and a system failure lasting over four hours, raising concerns.
Parents have also complained about students receiving results for subjects they didn’t take, and instances where students with the same marks received different grades.
Highlighting inconsistencies, the group suggested foul play and a breach of integrity in the KCPE results.
They criticized the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) for not promptly addressing complaints and dismissing parental concerns.
Despite the acknowledgment by KNEC of over 130 lodged cases, the Elimu group criticized the lack of a clear mechanism for submitting and resolving claims transparently.
The group called for accountability from CS Machogu, KNEC CEO David Njengere, and their teams, emphasizing their duty of care to candidates, teachers, and parents.
They asserted that these officials should take responsibility for the reported mess, citing negligence in handling the exams.
In response, KNEC issued a statement defending the accuracy of the results, attributing issues to a system failure displaying different plus or minus signs.
KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere explained that candidates have a 30-day window to address system-related concerns through the sub-county director of education.
However, he attributed the challenges to the SMS service provider, not KNEC itself.
