US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has thrown her support behind Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC), echoing the sentiments expressed by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
Expressing her admiration for Raila Odinga, Whitman emphasized the importance of his leadership within the African Union, stating, “I have a lot of respect for Raila and respect him a lot. I am pleased with his ability to lead the African Union, and that is good for East Africa and probably good for Kenya.”
The endorsement came following a recent meeting between Whitman and Odinga, where they engaged in productive discussions.
During their meeting on May 3rd, Odinga and Whitman delved into various pressing issues, including the ongoing flood emergency and relief efforts in Kenya, as well as US investment in the country.
Of particular significance was Raila Odinga’s bid for the Chairmanship of the AU Commission, which garnered considerable attention.
Addressing the flood crisis, Raila Odinga urged the Kenyan government to declare the situation a national disaster, underscoring the urgent need for concerted action to mitigate its impact on affected communities.
Raila Odinga, who expressed his readiness to vie for the AU Commission Chairmanship back in February, reiterated his commitment to service and highlighted his qualifications for the role.
“I have a tendency to accept challenges, and I am ready and willing to be of service,” he remarked.
Odinga also revealed his consultations with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and other friends regarding his candidacy, emphasizing his dedication to advancing the interests of the African continent.
Emphasizing Africa’s potential and the need for enhanced collaboration among its nations, Raila Odinga underscored the importance of effective leadership within the AU Commission.
“Africa is playing in a league that it should not be playing in… and it deserves better,” he asserted.
Odinga’s vision for a unified and prosperous Africa aligns with his aspirations to succeed Moussa Faki of Chad as the new Chairperson of the AU Commission.
With the endorsement from Ambassador Meg Whitman and his steadfast commitment to service and continental advancement, Raila Odinga’s bid for the AU Commission Chairmanship gains momentum as he seeks to usher in a new era of leadership for Africa.
