National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has denied a request from Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto to withdraw his signature supporting the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
During the debate on the impeachment motion, Wetang’ula addressed the MPs and stated that he had received a letter from Wandeto indicating his intention to retract his support.
“I received a letter from Geoffrey Wandeto purporting to withdraw his signature.
I urge the honourable members to refer to the Standing Orders, which clearly state that once you sign a Special Motion, you have crossed the Rubicon, and that signature cannot be withdrawn,” he emphasized.
The term “Rubicon” refers to a point of no return, indicating a commitment that cannot be undone.
The impeachment motion was introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse last week, garnering substantial support.
A total of 291 out of 345 National Assembly members signed in favor of the motion, significantly exceeding the required threshold of 117 members by 174 votes.
Currently, the National Assembly consists of 345 members, falling short of the constitutional requirement of 349.
The seats for Banisa, Magarini, and Ugunja constituencies are vacant, and the ODM nomination slot previously held by Treasury CS John Mbadi has yet to be filled.
