The Senate trial of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to begin on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment in his political career.
Senators will conduct hearings over the next two days, with a final vote expected to determine Gachagua’s future.
The day’s proceedings will commence at 9 a.m. with a closed-door pre-hearing session, where senators will establish the ground rules for the trial.
Following this, a brief preliminary session will outline the Senate’s mandate, the rules of procedure, and the hearing schedule.
Members of the National Assembly, alongside the defense and prosecution teams, will have the opportunity to introduce themselves, with Gachagua and his legal counsel expected to attend in person.
Schedule of Events:
- 10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.: Charges against Gachagua will be formally read.
- 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.: The National Assembly’s opening statement.
- 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.: The defense team’s opening statement.
- 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.: Presentation of evidence by the National Assembly, including witness testimonies.
- 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Lunch break.
- 2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Continued evidence and cross-examination by the National Assembly.
- 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: Senators will have the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications before the day’s adjournment.
Gachagua faces a total of 11 charges, including allegations of corruption, insubordination, and promoting divisive politics.
President William Ruto has not commented on the case thus far.
Speaking at a church service in Embu last Sunday, Gachagua addressed the ongoing political situation, urging Kenyans to maintain their faith and unity.
“Don’t worry about what is happening. We are Christians, and we believe in God.
People may plan, but God is in control. Keep praying for us and for our country,” he reassured the congregation.
