Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces a significant setback as several leaders from Mount Kenya publicly disagree with him.
On Tuesday, June 4, eight Members of Parliament from Meru County distanced themselves from Gachagua’s advocacy for the “one person, one vote, one shilling” initiative.
During a press conference held at the Parliament buildings, these MPs announced their abstention from endorsing the one-shilling program championed by leaders aligned with the deputy president.
The MPs cited President William Ruto’s firm stance against political divisions in the country as a key factor in their decision.
They echoed the president’s call for unity among democratically elected leaders, emphasizing the importance of freely traversing the nation without hindrance.
Contrary to Gachagua’s position advocating for elected leaders to remain within their constituencies, the Meru MPs asserted their role as national leaders, stating that they would go wherever their presence is needed.
“We support what the president said about the need for unity when we run our activities in the country. Merus are everywhere. We are national leaders. If we are needed we will go anywhere,” remarked one of the MPs, Mwirigi.
Among those present at the meeting were Rahim Dawood, Dorothy Ikiara, Mpuru Aburi, Julius Taituma, Dan Kili, and Moses Kirema.
The discord within political ranks has sparked questions, particularly since Gachagua holds the position of deputy president.
Some observers are questioning whether the government has fulfilled its promises to the people or if political conflicts are emerging before commitments are honored.
This public divergence among Mount Kenya leaders underscores broader tensions within the political landscape.
As debates intensify and alliances shift, the implications for governance and policy implementation remain uncertain.
The need for unity and collaboration among leaders to address pressing issues facing the nation is increasingly paramount, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue and consensus building in navigating Kenya’s complex political terrain.
