Nairobi: A woman aged 30 died while procuring an abortion in a hospital in Nairobi.
The woman was taken to Mama Lucy Hospital on referral where she died, police said.
The woman who had been referred to the facility had been to a private clinic in Eastleigh for the mission before it went bad.
She was then sent to the Mama Lucy Hospital where she died Thursday night, police said.
Police were called to the scene and said an investigation will be conducted.
Cases of procuring abortion have been on the rise in the country. Many are unreported as they don’t lead to deaths.
Those that turn fatal are the ones that reported, police say even as they term the issue as criminal.
Last year, 25 cases of procuring abortion were reported to police as compared to 36 that were recorded in 2021, 50 in 2020, 52 in 2019, and 12 in 2018.
Meanwhile, police are investigating claims by a lorry driver that he was robbed of 440 bags of rice that he was to deliver in Nakuru.
The driver told police he was driving the cargo along Mombasa highway from Mombasa and on reaching kilometers from Sultan Hamud, he offered a lift to a lady known to him.
The said the lady told him to drop him off a few kilometers ahead so that she could drop a parcel she had.
The incident happened on May 3, 2023. Police said as the woman alighted, three men emerged from a bush and hit the driver in the head before taking control of the lorry.
They then drove a few kilometers away and abandoned the driver at the Kwa Katheka area and disappeared with the lorry with its consignment to an unknown destination.
The driver was later rescued and taken to Kilungu sub-county hospital for treatment in serious condition.
No arrest or recovery has been made so far. Police are pursuing the case.
