Officials from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) arrested a bartender at Jey Jey Club in Kangemi for operating without a valid liquor license.
This action came after NACADA conducted a targeted operation in response to local complaints.
The operation focused on three bars in the Kihumbuini area, near Kihumbuini Primary School.
During the raid, it was discovered that Jey Jey Club was selling various alcoholic beverages without the necessary permit, and was allegedly using products with a suspended Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) certification.
The female bartender at Jey Jey Club was detained and taken to Jogoo Road Police Station.
She is currently awaiting further legal proceedings and will be presented in court soon.
NACADA has called on the public to continue providing information that supports their enforcement efforts.
Established in 2001, NACADA’s mission is to decrease the demand for alcohol and drugs through public awareness campaigns and rehabilitation services.
According to a 2022 report by NACADA, approximately one in eight Kenyans aged 15 to 65 years are affected by alcohol addiction.
The Western region recorded the highest rate of alcohol use at 23.8%, followed by the Coast at 12.9% and Central at 12.8%.
To address this issue, NACADA has recommended increased cooperation between national and county governments to improve control over the production, distribution, sale, and consumption of illicit alcohol.
