Police in Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi, arrested a man after the body of a woman was discovered inside a rented house in Mathare under circumstances being investigated as murder.
The incident was reported on Sunday, June 21, 2026, by locals who alerted authorities after finding the body in one of the rental units.
A team of police visited the scene and found the body of a woman identified only as Furaha, a Burundian national believed to be about 30 years old.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Furaha had arrived on Friday evening to visit her husband at the house.
Before entering, she reportedly borrowed a charcoal stove (jiko) from a neighbour, promising to return it later.
When the neighbour went to collect the jiko on Saturday morning, repeated knocks at the door went unanswered.
On Sunday at around noon, the caretaker became concerned and went to check on the occupants.
After persistent knocking, the man eventually opened the door.
The caretaker found Furaha lying naked on the floor.
Police said the body had begun decomposing and had a dislocated left elbow.
Investigators also observed a red powder, suspected to be pepper, in the woman’s private parts.
The exact cause of death will be determined through a post-mortem examination.
The man was reportedly drowsy and had difficulty walking when officers arrived.
Responders from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) administered first aid before he was taken into custody.
Crime scene investigators documented and processed the scene, and the body was moved to Nairobi City Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Police said the man remains under arrest while receiving medical attention as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Authorities have not yet established the cause of death, and no charges have been announced.
Meanwhile, police in Kahuro Sub-County, Murang’a County, are investigating the suspected drowning of a 28-year-old woman whose body was recovered from River Kayahwe several days after she was reported missing.
The incident was reported at Kahuro Police Station on Sunday, June 21, 2026 following an earlier missing person report filed on June 17.
The deceased was identified as Caroline Kabura, 28.
Her father told police that while on his way to church, he received a call informing him that a body had been spotted floating in River Kayahwe.
He rushed to the scene and, together with neighbours, searched the area before confirming that the body was that of his missing daughter.
Police officers from Kahuro Police Station visited the scene and, with the assistance of members of the public, retrieved the body from the river.
A preliminary examination found no visible external injuries, although the body had partially decomposed.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to Muriranjas Hospital Mortuary, where it will undergo a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Police are treating the case as a suspected drowning pending the outcome of investigations and the autopsy.
