In Maithairu, Kirinyaga, people are in shock after a 20-year-old woman named Grace Wambui tragically killed her two children, aged four and three, by throwing them into a nearby swamp.
This happened after a fight at home, where Wambui said she felt like ending her life.
The swamp, which was open because of work being done nearby, became the place where this terrible event took place.
Villagers found Wambui and her children near the swamp.
Thomas Kabuci, who was leading the group, tried to help by giving them food. He left briefly to get airtime to call Wambui’s family.
When he came back, he was shocked to see Wambui had thrown her children into the water, and the villagers were trying to stop her.
Michael Mwangi, who was fishing nearby, saw what happened and shouted for help. Even though people tried to save the children, they were found dead later.
Police from the Kiandai police post came and rescued Wambui from the villagers who were angry and had hurt her.
Pastor Peter Munene, who knew the family well, said Wambui and her husband had been having problems at home.
He talked about how serious mental health issues can be. Meanwhile, Moses Koskei, the police commander for Kirinyaga West, said they are investigating the case.
Wambui is in the hospital and will be taken to the police station after that.
The bodies of the two children are now in the Kerugoya mortuary, waiting for the doctors to do examinations to find out what happened.
The community is very sad and trying to understand why this happened while the authorities are working to find out the truth.
