The seven female governors of Kenya have convened in Kwale County for the G7 Summit, marking a historic first for the event in this region.
Hosted by Governor Fatuma Achani, the summit features participation from Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay).
Throughout the summit, the governors will tour various critical development initiatives, including the inauguration of the Kwale Oncology Centre at Kwale Hospital, visits to the Kwale Audio Visual Studio and Kwale Stadium, and the establishment of an Intensive Care Unit at Kinango Sub-County Hospital.
The event will conclude with a general meeting at Bang’a Teachers Training College.
This summit serves as a platform to advocate for women’s leadership in Kenyan politics, aiming to inspire greater female political participation.
The objective is to increase the number of female governors from the current seven to 24 by the year 2027, reflecting a broader initiative to tackle gender imbalances in political representation across the nation.
Since the 2022 general elections, where Kenya saw a record number of female governors elected, women in leadership have gained significant traction.
The summit underscores the rising momentum for gender equality and enhanced female representation in leadership roles.
While women currently hold only a fraction of the 47 governorships, their involvement is igniting a movement toward achieving more equitable political representation in upcoming elections.
