Church leader Eliud Wekesa, alias Yesu wa Tongaren, Tuesday walked out of court in Bungoma town a free man after the prosecution said they have no evidence against him.
Wekesa who is the leader of New Jerusalem Church, spent five days in a police cell in Bungoma as detectives investigated alleged offences against him including cult activities.
He was accused of running a religious cult in Tongaren, purporting to be Jesus Christ, teaching radical ideologies to his followers, some of whom are minors, as well as practising and promoting money laundering.
He denied the claims all along.
His lawyer George Wajackoyah defended him in court.
Police had wanted to ascertain the mental status of Wekesa in their investigation into alleged offences including cult activities.
Wekesa, a self-proclaimed ‘Jesus’, had been grilled by sleuths for three consecutive days.
Police are currently cracking down on cults in the country after the Shakahola forest one in Kilifi County brought out serious issues with more than 200 bodies now recovered from shallow graves.
A task force has been appointed to investigate the activities of the religious organizations.
This has drawn mixed reactions from various parties.
