A 17-year-old boy was shot dead and several others injured after suspected Samburu bandits allegedly ambushed a group of people returning from collecting firewood in Leparua, Isiolo County.
According to the police, the group had gone to collect firewood in Leparua on Sunday, September 20, 2026. At about 4pm, while returning home, they were allegedly ambushed and shot at indiscriminately by suspected bandits.
He sustained a gunshot wound, with the bullet entering through the nape and exiting through the forehead. He died at the scene.
Other members of the group were rescued after sustaining minor soft-tissue injuries.
During the attack, the suspected bandits allegedly stole a black Skygo motorcycle belonging to the complainant and four donkeys. They reportedly left behind a cart loaded with firewood.
The scene was processed and documented by police, while Naro’s body was moved to the Isiolo General Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examination.
Police launched a pursuit of the suspected attackers as efforts to intercept them continued.
This is the latest such incident to happen in the area amid police operations to contain the trend.
The area is among those under a special operation to tame banditry.
The operation targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo counties.
Besides retributive reaction, strategic investment and sustainable development have also taken a prominent place among the government’s planned crime control interventions for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the long-term vision is to empower the communities to actively take part in the war against animal rustling and undertake legitimate nation-building activities.
He said plans to distribute subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to area residents in a bid to revive farming activities as a source of livelihood.
Murkomen ordered fresh vetting for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) as part of efforts to bolster the operations.
