Three students from the University of Nairobi died after a boat they were in capsized on the Mulokoba Waterfront in Budalangi, Busia county.

The incident happened on new year’s Eve as the deceased were enjoying a boat ride.

Police said one of the victims is in Year 6, Year 3, and First Year.

Bunyala police commander Isaiah Mose said the deceased was part of a group of seven students on a fun boat ride.

He added the rest were rescued after the evening incident.

The bodies of the three have yet to be retrieved.

Mose said search teams called off the exercise late Saturday night after darkness fell.

The search resumed Sunday with hopes of recovering them.

Such accidents are common in the area amid security concerns.
