Man Posing As Speaker Wetangula’s Bodyguard, Gang Lure And Rob Driver Of Lorry In Gilgil

A gang including a client posing as the bodyguard of the Speaker of National Assembly Moses Wetangula lured a driver from Nairobi to Gilgil where they robbed him on a lorry and other personal effects.

The lorry is valued at about Sh5 million, police said.

Two men Joseph Waithaka and Peter Mwai, both employees of Wakape Parcels Company Limited told police that on May 8 they received a call from an unknown client who claimed he wanted a lorry to transport water pipes from Gilgil to Bungoma.

The caller later introduced himself as Speaker Wetangula’s bodyguard and said he would send a woman to accompany them to Gilgil as he was engaged in official duties.

He said he wanted the cargo to be delivered to his home in Bungoma.

The two, accompanied by the woman left Nairobi in one of the company’s lorries, an Isuzu FRR, and headed for Gilgil.

On reaching Gilgil at around 9 pm, the woman reportedly requested them to stop and she alighted before she was joined by two men.

She told the driver that one of the men was to direct them to where the pipes were while the other man was to accompany them to Bungoma.

They drove towards Old Nairobi road into a deep thicket where they found three other men who ordered them to alight and took control of the vehicle.

Two of the men and the woman drove away towards the Nairobi-Nakuru highway while the other three men held the driver and his turn boy hostage.

They tied them on both hands and legs and kept them in the thicket until morning when they escaped after robbing them of their mobile phones.

The victims later managed to find their way out of the thicket and reported the matter at Gilgil police station.

They were taken to the hospital for attention.

Police said no recovery or arrests so far made.

This comes in the wake of increased cases of impersonation in the country.
