Opera, a global internet innovator, has joined hands with Safaricom to offer free data in Ethiopia.

This partnership is part of Opera’s plan to increase internet access in Africa.

They’ve been working on this through their Free Data campaign since 2017, and they’ve invested over $100 million in the region to help more people get online with fast and reliable internet.

Opera has already helped nearly 40 million people in five countries get up to 3 GB of free browsing every month by partnering with local telecommunications companies.

This effort has made it easier and more affordable for users to start businesses, stay connected with loved ones, and access educational resources.

In Kenya, Opera has spent over $12 million on free data campaigns over the last three years.

Jørgen Arnesen, Executive VP of Mobile at Opera, said, “But at this point, the internet penetration rate is only around 16.7 percent nationwide.

So we’re excited to join forces with long-time partner Safaricom to help expand Ethiopia’s digital economy.

In the past, our collaboration provided a first window to the web for many users in Kenya, and we’re proud to work together to try to similarly bring millions of new users online in Ethiopia.”

With this campaign, Opera users in Ethiopia can enjoy up to 50 MB of free browsing every day when they use Opera Mini or Opera for Android on the Safaricom network.

However, this free data deal does not cover video streaming or file downloads.

It’s available for the latest versions of Opera Mini and Opera for Android.
