In the last three weeks, there has been significant progress in dealing with the long-standing issue of delays in getting passports, national IDs, and birth and death certificates.
The Ministry of Interior reports that the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services is working hard to address this problem.
They are now printing around 3,500 to 4,000 passports each day, which has reduced the backlog from over 100,000 to about 35,000.
CS Kithure Kindiki met with senior officials from the department to get updates on their progress.
He also spoke with the public to hear how their experience has improved with the services.
Immigration Principal Secretary Julius Bitok and Immigration Director General Evelyn Cheluget were also present during these discussions.
The Ministry of Interior had set a deadline to clear the backlog within the next five days.
This effort is part of a larger plan to combat corruption and make the process of getting passports and other services more efficient.

CS Kindiki mentioned that they plan to introduce stricter rules that will make sure people collect their passports within a specific timeframe.
Citizens are also encouraged to do their part in helping streamline the Immigration Department.
Kindiki said, “I think part of it is members of the public.
They apply for passports and then forget…
After that, we will withdraw because the law allows us to withdraw passports.”
He mentioned this during a surprise visit to the Embu Regional Immigration Department offices.
The Immigration Department is taking several steps to speed up the passport application process.
They are hiring more staff, setting up an emergency counter that operates day and night from Monday to Sunday, and accepting applications from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
