Ferry Breakdown Leaves Hundreds Stranded In Mbita

On Tuesday evening, over four hundred passengers found themselves stuck at the Mbita ferry terminal in Homa Bay County when the ferry ramp malfunctioned.

The passengers were en route to Luanda K’Otieno in Siaya County from Mbita mainland when the ramp, owned by Mbita Ferry Services, experienced a malfunction with passengers and at least 13 cars on board.

According to Bernard Siro, the manager of Mbita Ferry Services, the ramp malfunctioned while passengers were still boarding, as one of the chains controlling it had broken down.

The incident occurred at the terminal before the vessel could depart for Luanda Kotieno.

Mr. Siro explained that they had to postpone the journey for several hours to explore alternatives since operating the ferry with a faulty ramp posed a risk to passengers.

To address the situation, two other vessels were used to transport the stranded passengers while repairs were underway for the malfunctioning ramp.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the incident.
