Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has unveiled a program distributing gas cylinders to households in Ngariama Ward, addressing climate change impacts.
Waiguru emphasized the urgency of combatting climate change, particularly in areas like Ngariama, where deforestation poses significant challenges.
She stated, “We are taking drastic measures to sensitize and support our people on clean energy fuel as opposed to firewood.”
The initiative aims to alleviate the environmental strain caused by reliance on firewood, which contributes to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.
Waiguru highlighted the importance of providing cleaner energy alternatives, especially for women who bear the brunt of traditional cooking methods.
“This is not only a climate change adaptation measure but also a way of improving the lives of our women,” she affirmed.
Furthermore, Waiguru stressed the health benefits of using LPG, stating, “Besides being one of the most efficient and cost-effective sources of cooking fuel, the use of LPG saves families from the effects of pollutants such as carbon monoxide.”
In addition to the gas cylinder distribution, the County Government of Kirinyaga has implemented various climate change mitigation strategies.
These include establishing a climate action fund, laws for solid waste management, and initiatives to enhance agricultural resilience.
Waiguru also distributed irrigation equipment to boost local agricultural production, emphasizing the importance of water access for farming communities.
“Availability of irrigation water will enable the beneficiaries to increase production of crops such as vegetables, maize, and other horticultural produce,” she explained.
The comprehensive approach to climate change adaptation and agricultural development underscores Kirinyaga’s commitment to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.
