Opposition leader Bobi Wine reported that heavily armed security forces had besieged his party headquarters on Monday, arresting several leaders, ahead of a planned anti-corruption march banned by authorities.
This action occurred shortly after President Yoweri Museveni‘s warning to Ugandans against participating in Tuesday’s street protests, which he deemed risky.
Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi, informed AFP that security forces had surrounded the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Kavule, Kampala, prior to a scheduled party press conference.
“Our headquarters are under siege by heavily armed police and military.
This was expected by the regime, but we remain committed to Uganda’s liberation,” he stated, asserting their resolve despite the crackdown.
While Wine alleged that several party leaders were violently arrested, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke justified the deployment, citing intelligence suggesting potential disruptions of peace due to a mobilized crowd.
Ugandan authorities have frequently targeted the NUP and Wine, a former popstar turned politician who challenged Museveni in the 2021 elections without success.
Wine cautioned protestors about the regime’s readiness to use force to maintain power, stressing the need for a more inclusive governance model.
The planned anti-corruption march, organized on social media under the hashtag #StopCorruption, was prohibited by Ugandan police, who feared disorderly conduct and illegal demonstrations.
Museveni reinforced this stance in a televised address, warning against destabilizing actions.
In Uganda, corruption remains a significant issue, ranking poorly on international corruption indices.
Earlier sanctions imposed by the US and UK on Ugandan officials underscored concerns over misappropriation of public funds.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Kenya, protests against President William Ruto’s administration continue amid allegations of corruption and police brutality, with activists demanding accountability and reforms.
