On Monday evening, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) advised passengers traveling through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi to arrive early due to increased security checks at Kenya’s main airport.
“Due to heightened security checks and protocols at JKIA, passengers are advised to arrive at the airport early to avoid any potential delays in catching their flights.
Kindly contact your respective airline for the latest flight information,” the national airport operator announced on its social media platforms.
This advisory was issued in anticipation of Tuesday’s planned anti-government protests in Nairobi, where demonstrators are organizing a march to JKIA.
Despite President William Ruto dropping the contentious Finance Bill, 2024, last month, protests against his administration have continued, with demands for a complete government overhaul and calls for his resignation.
Tuesday’s protest, named ‘OccupyJKIA’, follows previous demonstrations, such as ‘OccupyParliament’ and ‘OccupyCBD’ in Nairobi’s city center.
Police have warned protesters against entering protected areas.
Acting Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja emphasized that while protesting is a right for all Kenyans, legal boundaries must be respected.
“The Protected Areas Act Cap 204 Laws of Kenya prevents the entry of unauthorized persons into areas which have been declared to be protected areas.
[They] include the LPG Plant, the Bitumen Plant, and Petroleum depots situated at the Embakasi Aviation Depot (JKIA),” Kanja stated.
He further noted that the Kenya Civil Aviation Act stipulates that trespassing on government aerodrome land constitutes an offense punishable by law.
“We urge all individuals participating in demonstrations to respect these legal provisions and refrain from attempting to enter or interfere with protected areas.
The National Police Service is resolute in its commitment to uphold and enforce these laws,” Kanja added.
JKIA, the busiest airport in East Africa, serves as the main gateway into Kenya and is a hub for national carrier Kenya Airways.
It also serves major airlines such as Emirates, Turkish Airways, British Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines.
