Operation Linda Jamii Seeks Court Order For Police Support In Peaceful Protest To State House

Lobby group Operation Linda Jamii has filed a petition in court requesting police support for a planned peaceful protest to the State House in Nairobi and various State Lodges across Kenya.

The court documents indicate that the petitioners have formally informed the Inspector General of Police (IG) about the nationwide march scheduled for Tuesday, July 30.

The protest aims to present petitions to the State House and several state lodges in Mombasa, Kisumu, Sagana, Nyeri, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Kitale.

Operation Linda Jamii, comprising its members and other supportive Kenyans, is calling for a peaceful demonstration.

The group has expressed concern over the historical use of police force against peaceful protesters, urging the IG to ensure that officers exercise restraint during the march.

The petition highlights a troubling trend where peaceful protesters have faced violence, intimidation, torture, unlawful detention, and even murder.

The document criticizes the Kenya Kwanza administration for allegedly deploying officers to intimidate citizens, thereby violating constitutional rights.

“The nation is rapidly becoming a police state,” the petition asserts. It accuses the government of criminalizing dissent, denying due process, and resuming extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances.

The petition emphasizes that the 2010 Constitution of Kenya envisions a government grounded in human rights, equality, freedom, democracy, social justice, and the rule of law.

The call for a march to the State House initially emerged during nationwide protests on June 27.

At that time, heavily armed officers and military personnel were stationed around State House, barring access to the premises.

Under the Protected Areas Act, the State House and State Lodges are designated protected areas, with unauthorized entry punishable by imprisonment or fines.
