Businessman Warned Against Interfering In Court Case Over Data Disclosure

A businessman accused of unlawfully disclosing personal data to a third party has been cautioned against interfering with ongoing court proceedings.

The warning follows allegations that Hatim Tahir threatened the complainant, Lauren Rose Friedman.

Through her attorney, Danstan Omari, Friedman has requested the cancellation of Tahir’s cash bail.

“The complainant has received multiple threats in an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice. We will be asking the prosecution to revoke the bond terms granted to the accused,” Omari stated.

Prosecutor Kiragu added that they plan to request another mention date in September, noting that additional arrests are expected and should be addressed together during the hearing.

The defense did not object to this request but raised concerns about not yet receiving the documents that the prosecution intends to use in the case.

Milimani resident magistrate Rose Ndombi scheduled the next court mention for October 1 and issued summons for the investigating officer to appear in court.

“Further mention on October 1 for pre-trial. Summons to be issued to the Investigating Officer to ensure that there is no interference,” the court ordered.

According to the charge sheet, it is alleged that on September 19, 2023, at the Gigiri courtyard in the Westlands sub-county of Nairobi, Tahir, along with another individual not present in court, disclosed personal data to Lynn Ng’ang’a, a lawyer involved in his civil case without proper authorization.

The data in question, which included CCTV footage, belonged to both an adult and a minor.

Tahir, who is currently out on a cash bail of Sh100,000, has requested more lenient bond terms.
