The Kenyan government has officially submitted documentation to support Raila Odinga‘s candidacy for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Led by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, the delegation presented the necessary paperwork to Dharmraj Busgeeth, the Dean of the Eastern Region, as well as to the Office of the Legal Counsel of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

Sing’oei outlined Odinga’s priorities if elected, which include African integration and infrastructure development, economic transformation, enhancing intra-African trade, financial independence, gender equity and equality, agricultural transformation, climate action, peace and security, and a youth empowerment agenda for Africa.

During the African Union’s 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council on March 15, 2024, it was announced that the election for senior leadership positions would take place in February 2025.

It was agreed that the Eastern Region would submit candidates for the Chairperson role, while the Northern Region would propose candidates for Deputy Chairperson.

Candidates for the Chairperson position are required to submit their resumes in the approved AU format, along with a brief vision statement outlining how they plan to tackle pressing issues facing the AU and the continent.

This statement should be written in at least two of the AU’s working languages and should not exceed one and a half pages. The AU will publish each candidate’s vision statement on a dedicated webpage.

In support of Raila Odinga’s candidacy, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi unveiled a comprehensive campaign strategy on June 5, 2024.

This strategy includes establishing a campaign secretariat within the State Department for Foreign Affairs, outreach initiatives to AU member states, and organizing a public debate to be broadcast live to African citizens six months prior to the election.

Mudavadi expressed confidence in Odinga’s ability to secure the position, affirming the government’s commitment to fully support the candidate.
