Kenya Airports Authority Guarantees Smooth Operations Despite Strike Threat

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has assured the public that airport operations will remain uninterrupted despite the threat of an upcoming industrial strike by aviation workers.

In a statement released on August 16, 2024, KAA confirmed that it has implemented contingency measures to address potential disruptions.

The authority also acknowledged receiving a strike notice from the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) on August 12, 2024.

KAA’s statement outlined their preparations for the potential strike action scheduled for August 19, 2024, and reassured stakeholders that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain smooth operations at the airports.

The statement further revealed that discussions are ongoing between KAA, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, and KAWU to resolve the issues amicably.

KAA emphasized its commitment to upholding high standards of service for passengers and stakeholders across its airport facilities nationwide.

On August 15, 2024, Cabinet Secretary for Labor and Social Protection, Alfred Mutua, held a crucial meeting with KAWU officials to negotiate a resolution.

Mutua expressed confidence in resolving the workers’ concerns without disrupting services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

“I believe that through constructive dialogue, we can address the concerns of aviation workers while ensuring that JKIA operations continue smoothly,” Mutua said.

“We are committed to finding a solution that protects jobs and maintains the effective functioning of our airport services.”
