On Friday, Thailand’s parliament chose Paetongtarn Shinawatra, a political newcomer, as the country’s youngest prime minister.
Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House of Representatives, stated: “Paetongtarn Shinawatra has received over half of the votes from House members.
Therefore, the Parliament has confirmed her nomination for Prime Minister in accordance with Section 159 of the Constitution.”
Paetongtarn, who garnered 319 votes nearly two-thirds of the house was not present for the vote, observing it from the Pheu Thai Party headquarters.
At 37, Paetongtarn, daughter of the influential and contentious Thaksin Shinawatra, secured a significant victory despite her lack of governmental experience.
Her appointment follows the recent removal of her ally, Srettha Thavisin, by the judiciary, a central figure in Thailand’s persistent political turbulence.
Her ascent is crucial for the Shinawatra family’s political trajectory.
The family’s populist movement, which had been dominant for over 20 years, suffered its first electoral defeat last year and had to negotiate with military opponents to establish a government.
