Housekeeper Faces Charges For Abducting 2-Year-Old Boy

Faith Omonya, a 23-year-old househelp, faced charges in court on Tuesday for allegedly abducting a child under her care at the Department of Defense (DoD) staff quarters in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

Appearing before Kibera Chief Magistrate Anne Mwangi, Omonya pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 3 when Omonya, who was responsible for the child while the mother was at work, fled from the employer’s home.

Fedilia Atyang, a medical worker at the Ministry of Defense and the child’s mother, was informed by a neighbor at 5 pm that her older daughter had returned home unattended.

Atyang had previously contacted Omonya at 11 am that day, and the househelp had assured her that the child was well and had been fed.

However, upon returning home at 5 pm, Atyang found the househelp missing and the older daughter unsupervised.

The suspect had taken her belongings and turned off her phone, according to the Kilimani Police Station report.

Further investigation revealed that Omonya had traveled to her rural home in Lukhakha, Bungoma, with a child matching the description of the missing boy.

Police were able to trace and reunite the child with his mother.

The court has set a bond of Sh200,000 for Omonya and required her to present a contact person.

The case is scheduled for mention on September 16, when the court will review a probation report.
