Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced the successful recovery of ex-Citizen TV presenter Kimani Mbugua and former NTV Health and Science journalist Eunice Omollo.
In a statement released on Tuesday, October 15, Sonko provided updates on the two journalists, who are currently receiving care at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Mental Rescue Center.
Sonko has been covering their medical expenses since their admission to the center in May, with Kimani Mbugua having been transferred there from Mathari Hospital, where he was initially treated.
Nearly four months later, Sonko shared a video showcasing the two, confirming their full recovery.
“There is God in heaven, and may His name be praised. Former Royal Media journalist Kimani Mbugua and his NTV colleague Eunice Omollo are healed and fully recovered,” Sonko announced.
In one video, Eunice Omollo spoke confidently at a ceremony commemorating World Mental Health Day, identifying herself as a mental health champion.
“I am honored to stand before you on this special occasion.
As a journalist, I often observe and report on events like this, but today, I’m here not as a journalist but as a mental health advocate,” she said, eliciting applause from the crowd.
Omollo also shared her recovery journey, revealing that she has lived with bipolar disorder for 19 years, which profoundly affected both her personal and professional life.
Kimani Mbugua also discussed his recovery, explaining that he has been battling mental health issues for the past four years.
Before his admission, he gained attention on social media when comedian Oga Obinna intervened to assist him.
On May 17, Obinna took Kimani from his home to Mathari Hospital after his father reported a significant change in Kimani’s behavior following an incident at a birthday party in February 2020, where he believed his drink had been spiked.
Sonko also mentioned that Nasibo Kabale, another patient at the facility, is recovering well, and that boxing legend Conjestina Achieng received professional treatment there as well.
