Somalia Expels Senior Official From Ethiopian Embassy

The Government of Somalia has officially declared Ali Mohamed Adan, a senior official at the Ethiopian embassy in Mogadishu, persona non grata.

According to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Adan, who has held the position of Counselor II, was allegedly involved in activities inconsistent with his diplomatic role.

The ministry cited violations of Articles 41 and 42 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), which require diplomats to respect the laws of their host country and refrain from interfering in its internal affairs.

Adan has been given 72 hours to leave Somalia.

In a statement, the Ministry emphasized, “These actions constitute a breach of the Vienna Convention, particularly Articles 41 and 42, which mandate diplomats to respect the laws of the host nation and abstain from involvement in its internal affairs.”

It further asserted that the declaration is a measure to protect national interests and uphold international diplomatic standards.

This decision underscores Somalia’s commitment to its sovereignty and adherence to international law.

The ministry reiterated, “This action reaffirms Somalia’s dedication to maintaining international diplomatic protocols and upholding its national sovereignty.”

Analysts view this development as an escalation in the already strained diplomatic relations between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Tensions have intensified following Ethiopia’s signing of a 50-year port deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland earlier this year a move Somalia deems a violation of its territorial integrity.

Although Somaliland has functioned independently since the 1990s, it is not recognized by many countries.

Several international organizations, including the UN, have called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions.

Despite two rounds of mediated talks by Turkey yielding no positive outcomes, Somalia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Omar Balcad, insists that productive dialogue hinges on addressing issues of sovereignty and restoring trust between the nations.
