Chief Justice Martha Koome led the Judiciary in mourning the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a towering statesman whose life and legacy are inseparable from Kenya’s democratic journey.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission, and in her personal capacity, Justice Koome said she received the news of Odinga’s death “with profound sorrow and deep sadness.”
She extended heartfelt condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and to the people of Kenya, noting that the Judiciary shares in the nation’s grief and joins Kenyans in mourning the loss of “one of Kenya’s most enigmatic and consequential leaders.”
“Kenya has lost a statesman whose name is forever etched in the annals of our democratic journey , a towering figure who stood at the confluence of history and destiny, and who, through courage, sacrifice, and conviction, held together the fragile threads of our nation’s democracy,” Koome said.
The Chief Justice hailed Odinga’s lifelong struggle for political freedom, constitutional reform, and justice, crediting him with transforming Kenya’s political landscape and anchoring the principles of equality and accountability that define governance today.
