A search operation went continued Tuesday after a 20-year-old man drowned while attempting to board a sand dredging vessel on Lake Victoria in Kisumu.
According to the Railways and Ports Police Unit, the incident was reported at about 10.30pm on Monday.
Police officers from Kisumu Railport Police Station responded to the scene and established that the victim, identified as Vincent Otieno, a storekeeper for Mango Tree, slipped into the lake while climbing a ladder to board a vessel used for sand dredging.
A multi-agency team based at Kisumu Railport has launched a search and recovery operation to trace his body.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
And police in Tharaka Nithi County are investigating the death of a man whose body was recovered from a river in Igambang’ombe Sub-county.
The incident was reported on Monday afternoon after the body of Gerald Gitonga Kirimo was spotted in the Mutonga River at Mpangua Village.
Police visited the scene and confirmed the incident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, who was deaf and mute, was last seen alive on Monday morning when he left his daughter’s home.
Police said the body had no visible injuries.
It was retrieved from the river and taken to Chuka County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
