Meta has signed a landmark agreement with Kenyan telecoms leader Safaricom to bring its second undersea internet cable to Kenya.
Through its subsidiary Edge Network Services Limited, Meta has appointed Safaricom as the landing partner for a new high-capacity submarine cable linking Oman and Kenya, a move set to boost the country’s international connectivity.
“This partnership marks a major strategic milestone for Safaricom as we celebrate 25 years,” said Dr Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom’s CEO. “It demonstrates our readiness to evolve into a full-scale technology company in line with our Vision 2030 ambitions.”
The collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for faster, high-capacity, low-latency internet, which is becoming essential for economic growth, cloud adoption, and digital innovation across the region.
According to Safaricom, the deal strengthens its commitment to delivering resilient and future-ready connectivity, positioning the firm as a frontrunner in Africa’s digital transformation. The project is expected to empower businesses, communities, and consumers with enhanced bandwidth to support the next phase of digital progress.
The undersea cable system will be fully funded by Meta’s Edge subsidiary, while licensed operators in Kenya and Oman will manage the sections within their territorial waters, including all related local infrastructure.
