Safaricom’s M-Pesa Foundation Unveils KSh 30 Billion Education Drive for 10,000 Scholarships and 600 School Upgrades

Safaricom has launched an ambitious KSh 30 billion education initiative under the Citizens of the Future programme, which aims to revolutionise learning across Kenya within five years. The project, driven by the M-Pesa Foundation, will provide 10,000 scholarships and modernise over 600 schools across all 47 counties.

According to Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa, the initiative will also focus on equipping teachers with digital and ICT training, improving classroom infrastructure, and creating inclusive spaces for learners with special needs.

Speaking during the launch, Ndegwa said the programme is part of Safaricom’s long-term plan to “build schools of the future”, institutions designed with sustainable infrastructure and access to cutting-edge technology. He explained that Citizens of the Future consolidates all of Safaricom’s education projects into one transformative initiative that will expand digital access and open doors for students from underprivileged backgrounds.

“This programme isn’t just about renovating schools; it’s about reshaping the future by investing in tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” he said, reaffirming Safaricom’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal on quality education.

The company’s existing efforts in education include setting up Instant Network Schools in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps, giving displaced learners access to digital classrooms. Through partnerships with UNICEF Kenya and Huawei, Safaricom has already connected more than 30,000 students to online learning tools.

Reflecting on his own academic journey from Ngaideithia Primary to Starehe Boys Centre, Ndegwa emphasised that no child should be denied an education due to circumstances of birth. He described Citizens of the Future as a mission to ensure every Kenyan child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in an increasingly digital world.
