NTSA Launches Automated Instant Fines System for Traffic Offenders

Road accidents continue to pose a serious threat in Kenya, with lives lost on a regular basis.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially rolled out its Instant Fines Traffic Management System, an automated platform that sends traffic violation notices to motorists via SMS.

In a statement on March 9, the NTSA Director General confirmed that the system is now fully operational.

“The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) wishes to inform the public that the Instant Fines Traffic Management System is now live,”  the statement read.

The new system operates without human intervention, providing a more transparent, efficient, and accountable method of enforcing traffic laws.

How the System Works
The Instant Fines platform automatically detects traffic violations and sends notifications directly to the registered mobile number of the driver or vehicle owner. This eliminates the need for manual processing.

“The system will automatically issue traffic violation notifications via SMS to motorists where applicable,” the Director General said.

Once a violation is recorded, the system generates the fine and provides details such as the amount payable and reference information.

Payment Guidelines and Compliance
All fines can be settled through KCB Group branches within seven days of notification. Late payments incur interest on the outstanding amount.

“All fines issued through the system can be paid through the branch network of KCB Group within 7 days. Failure to settle the fine due within the 7 days will result in the amount due earning interest,” the authority stated.

Vehicles or drivers with unpaid fines will be blocked from NTSA services, preventing license renewals, ownership transfers, and other regulatory transactions until the fines are cleared.

Motorists are urged to follow traffic regulations and respond promptly to SMS notifications to avoid penalties and service restrictions.

“Motorists are advised to observe all traffic regulations and respond promptly to any official notifications received. Further details will be communicated through official government channels,” the statement added.
