Kisumu Governor Calls For Quick Investigation Into Maseno University Student Murder

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has urged the police to quickly investigate the killing of the Maseno University student during the Monday anti-government protests.

The governor through a statement on March 20, 2023, said the police were brutal on unarmed protestors.

It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students,” the governor stated.

Nyong’o demanded that the police who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible.

He called out the police to exhibit professionalism and restraint while quelling riots.

The third year was shot dead in Kisumu’s Maseno area during the protest.

Police said William Mayange was among a group of students who had joined the Azimio protests which later turned violent after the protesters invaded a supermarket in Maseno town.

The student was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Coptic hospital where he had been rushed.

Other students denied the claims by police of raiding the supermarket.

Police said the students overpowered the security officers who had run out of teargas canisters.

As a result, police say the student was shot in the neck after the officers started firing live bullets to repulse the intruders who had allegedly invaded the supermarket.

The police and Independent Policing Oversight Authority are investigating the tragedy.
