Police have arrested 12 Form Three students in connection with a suspected arson attack that destroyed the three-storey Owino B dormitory at Maranda High School on Sunday evening.
The suspects were reportedly intercepted while allegedly attempting to flee and are currently being held at Bondo Police Station as investigations continue.
According to investigators, CCTV footage from petrol stations in Bondo is said to show six of the students purchasing petrol, which is believed to have been used in the attack.
Reports indicate the students raised Ksh2,500 during a school sports event, sneaked out, bought the fuel, and later smuggled it back into the school compound by hiding it near or through a fence before concealing it in a dustbin.
Police further allege that the fuel was later used to soak mattresses and blankets, which were then set on fire inside the dorm before the suspects fled.
Some items believed to be linked to the incident, including masks and clothing, were reportedly recovered in school toilets during the ongoing investigation.
Following growing tensions between Form Three and Form Four students, the school administration has since sent all Form Three students home indefinitely as authorities work to prevent further unrest and establish the full circumstances surrounding the fire.
