Konza Technopolis Connected to National Grid Through KSh8.4 Billion Power Project

Kenya has strengthened the development prospects of Konza Technopolis after linking the flagship smart city to the national electricity grid through a newly completed high-voltage transmission line and substation designed to support future industrial, commercial and residential expansion.

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) announced the successful energisation of the 400kV Isinya-Konza transmission line and the Konza substation. The project includes a 48-kilometre transmission line between Isinya and Konza, two 350MVA 400/132kV transformers, and two 75MVA 132/66kV transformers.

KETRACO said the city will receive electricity from some of Kenya’s largest renewable energy sources, including the Kipeto Wind Power Project, geothermal generation from Olkaria, and the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project.

Konza will also benefit from hydroelectric power imported from Ethiopia through the regional power interconnection network.

KETRACO Acting Managing Director Kipkemoi Kibias said the commissioning of the transmission line and substation would enhance the reliability of the national grid while ensuring a stable and high-quality power supply to Konza Technopolis and neighbouring areas.

He noted that the infrastructure is vital for driving industrial growth, attracting investment and supporting the country’s Vision 2030 development goals.

The KSh8.4 billion project was jointly financed by the Government of Kenya and the Export-Import Bank of China, with construction undertaken by China Aerospace Construction Group Company Limited.

The development comes as the government intensifies efforts to transform Konza from a long-planned project into a fully operational economic hub capable of attracting investors and accelerating industrialisation. Although roads, buildings and other public infrastructure have gradually been established within the city, reliable transmission-grade electricity has long been viewed as a critical requirement for large-scale business operations.

KETRACO added that the new power infrastructure will enhance grid stability, improve operational flexibility and strengthen the reliability and quality of electricity supply across Kajiado, Machakos and Makueni counties.
