A suspected bandit was killed following a fierce exchange of gunfire between security officers and an armed gang during an overnight operation in Isiolo North Sub-County.
Police said a multi-agency team comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS) at Kulamawe Police Station and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) laid an ambush on the night of July 4, 2026, after acting on credible intelligence.
At about 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, the officers reportedly encountered about 15 heavily armed suspected bandits.
A fierce gun battle ensued before the suspects retreated into nearby thickets. No police officer was injured during the operation.
Later, at around 10:00 a.m., members of the public alerted police after discovering a body in the ambush area.
A multi-agency team visited the scene and found the body of a middle-aged man with a gunshot wound.
The deceased was identified as Evans Egelan, whom police described as a notorious bandit from the Kambi ya Juu area. Investigators believe he was leading the group of suspected bandits to carry out a criminal mission when they encountered the security team.
The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Meru General Hospital Mortuary for preservation as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, police arrested two suspects following a shooting incident linked to an attempted stock theft at Jennings Farm in Laikipia West Sub-County, as investigations into the attack continue.
A multi-agency security team revisited the scene and recovered an additional nine spent cartridges, bringing the total number recovered from the scene to 17.
With the assistance of a tracking dog from Olmaisor Ranch, the team traced and arrested two suspects both 22-year-old.
Meanwhile, a Police Constable who sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation, was transferred from Nakuru General Hospital to Nairobi West Hospital for specialized treatment.
Police said the officer is in stable condition and remains admitted.
Investigations into the attempted stock theft and the shooting incident are ongoing as security agencies pursue other suspects believed to have been involved.
The area is among those under a special operation to address banditry menace.
