Sh5.94 Million Counterfeit Alcoholic Drinks, KRA Stamps Impounded In Thika


The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives have recovered another counterfeit consignment of alcoholic drinks worth Sh5.94 million in Thika, Kiambu County.

Sleuths drawn from the Economic Crimes Unit in collaboration with officials from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) conducted a raid at a go-down owned by Sunrise Limited in Makongeni on Thursday.

“Two drums of ethanol, 40 cartons of Euro Brandy Gin, 90 cartons of Sambuka vodka, 6 cartons of StarLight Vodka, 160 cartons of Budget Vodka, and 49 cartons of Queens vodka all affixed with KRA counterfeit stamps were recovered,” the investigative agency said.

The multi-agency team also impounded an illegal bottling machine, half a roll of counterfeit KRA stamps, and  36000 pieces of the same.

Assorted empty bottles, cartons, caps, and drums were also recovered.

According to the DCI report, the value of the goods seized was estimated at Sh5.94 million and the total tax loss was Sh2.38 million.

The products were seized and a notice of offense serial number 7700 was issued.

The bottling plant was also dismantled.

Efforts to arrest the owner of the unlicensed business, who is believed to be one Joseph Kanja, are at the advanced stages.
