DPP Orders Confiscation Of Mackenzie, Other Shakahola Cult Suspects’ Assets

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered the confiscation of Paul Mackenzie and related suspects’ assets pending charges.

Haji Tuesday directed the officers to identify the assets of the suspects for the purpose of preservation, confiscation, and forfeiture in accordance with the law.

He vowed to prosecute those involved upon completion of the investigation.

DPP revealed that preliminary investigations show that the suspects may have been promoting radical belief systems for the purpose of facilitating ideologically based violence to advance political, religious, or social change.

According to Haji, this is contrary to Section 12D of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.

The office of DPP obtained another court order for the exhumation of an unknown number of bodies from the 800-acre land days after applying to exhume 17 bodies in the same land on April 17, 2023.

He said the suspects may be charged with murder, procuring, counseling, and aiding persons to kill themselves, terrorist acts by threatening national security and public safety, and radicalization.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki today declared the 800-acre parcel of land in Shakahola occupied by Mackenzie followers a disturbed area and security operation zone starting Tuesday night.

So far 34 people have been rescued from the forest including three who were found alive on Tuesday, said Kindiki after visiting the scene.

At least 213 people have been reported missing as the investigation into a macabre cult at Shakahola continues.

The CS reported that at least 90 bodies had been retrieved.
