The shocking abduction and gang rape of a Mombasa-based blogger has sparked widespread outrage across Kenya, prompting calls for justice and accountability for those involved.
Bruce John, known as Chawa, was reportedly kidnapped from his home in Bamburi by individuals linked to Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir.
After being assaulted and sodomized, he was abandoned at a dumpsite in the Mwakirunge area of Mombasa County.
Four individuals have been charged with the abduction and sexual assault, but many Kenyans are demanding the arrest and prosecution of Governor Abdulswamad, whom Chawa has accused of orchestrating the attack.
The governor has vehemently denied any involvement, claiming the accusations are part of a political witch-hunt by his adversaries.
“This time around, those of you who abuse and criticize us, even implicating our parents, will face consequences in 2027.
We will remind you of the wrongs you have done to our people,” Abdulswamad stated on Monday.
In response to the ongoing investigation, the governor revealed that he and his mother have been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to provide statements regarding the assault on Chawa.
Additionally, Mombasa County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Lands and Urban Planning, Mohamed Hussein, was arrested in connection with the case but was released on Monday after securing anticipatory bail.
The situation escalated due to Chawa’s outspoken political views.
He is a vocal supporter of Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed and has been a staunch critic of Governor Abdulswamad’s administration.
Through various social media platforms, particularly TikTok, Chawa has lambasted the county government for its alleged mismanagement and lack of progress in improving the lives of residents.
His unwavering support for Zamzam has reportedly angered the governor’s camp, as she continues to gain visibility and popularity among constituents.
Chawa has consistently vowed to defend Zamzam against any opposition, further intensifying the political tensions surrounding his abduction and assault.
The incident has raised serious concerns about political violence and the safety of individuals expressing dissenting opinions in Kenya.
