The National Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has unveiled a tiered licensing fee structure for businesses engaged in the importation or exportation of alcoholic beverages in Kenya.
The regulatory body specified a maximum licensing fee of Ksh1 million for such enterprises.
In a statement, NACADA disclosed that it had assumed licensing functions from the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee. The licensing fees are categorized based on the volume of alcoholic drinks intended for import or export over the next twelve months.
“Fees payable are according to the volumes intended to be imported or exported in the coming period of twelve months,” the statement read
According to NACADA’s directive, businesses dealing with the import or export of one million liters are required to pay an annual licensing fee of Ksh1 million. For volumes ranging from 500,000 to 999,999 liters, the fee stands at Ksh500,000, while any amount below that threshold incurs a licensing fee of Ksh250,000.

The regulatory body emphasized that the processing of certificates would be completed within 14 days after receiving an application. As part of the application process, interested parties must download a form from the NACADA website and submit the duly filled Application Form to the designated receiving officer within the legal department.
The NACADA Licensing Committee will then convene to assess whether an applicant qualifies for an import/export license. Upon committee approval, the applicant will be required to pay the prescribed license fees. Notably, only approved applicants will receive notification to proceed with the fee payment.
Traders can collect their licenses from the NACADA offices once they are ready, as communicated by the regulatory body. NACADA’s move is seen as a measure to regulate and monitor the alcohol trade while streamlining the licensing process for businesses operating in this sector in Kenya.
