At least two students were killed and at least 19 others injured after a Hino bus was involved in a road accident at Boya area along the Ahero-Awasi Road in Kisumu County.
The accident occurred on Friday at about 2pm and involved a Hino bus belonging to Janam Services, which was travelling from Kisumu towards Awasi with mourners.
The bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control, causing it to veer off the road and land on the right side while facing the Awasi direction.
The driver was not found at the scene.
One passenger, Otieno Evans Odiwuor, 22, died on the spot, while Roony Owen Odhiambo, 23, died while being rushed to Lisa Hospital.
Nineteen other passengers sustained various injuries, including cuts, bruises, headaches, back and limb pain. One unidentified female passenger was reported to be unconscious.
The injured passengers were rushed to Lisa Hospital, where they were receiving treatment.
Police officers visited and processed the scene before towing the bus to the station, where it was detained pending inspection.
The bodies of the two deceased passengers were moved to Ahero Sub-County Mortuary and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) respectively, pending autopsy.
The victims were students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) who were en route to Kisumu County to attend the burial of former student leader Elvis Otieno, popularly known as Beast
Siaya Governor James Orengo and interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo mourner the dead.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of several university students along the Awasi–Ahero highway.
They were traveling from Mombasa to Kisumu to pay their last respects to Elvis Otieno alias ‘Beast,’ former student leader of Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), a journey of solidarity that ended in unimaginable grief.
To the grieving families, friends, and the entire TUM comrade fraternity, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this dark hour.
May God grant you strength, and may their young souls rest in eternal peace,” Orengo said in a post on social media.
Police officers, emergency responders and members of the public mounted a rescue operation, helping evacuate survivors and rushing the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The accident occurred as family members, friends and former student leaders from across the country gathered in Awasi for the burial of Elvis Otieno.
The crash adds to a growing number of serious road accidents reported across Kenya in recent weeks, renewing concerns over road safety and adherence to traffic regulations.
