Francis Atwoli, the Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu), has been re-elected for an unprecedented fifth term as a titular member of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) governing body in Geneva, Switzerland.
His re-election, announced during the 112th Session of the International Labour Conference on Monday, June 10, saw Atwoli secure 97 out of 130 votes.
This milestone means he will continue representing workers in the ILO governing body for another three years, setting a new record as the first representative to hold the position for five consecutive terms.
In response to the news, Atwoli expressed gratitude, stating, “This historic re-election not only marks my continued commitment to the international labour movement but also establishes me as the longest-serving member of the ILO governing body and I don’t take it for granted.”
The ILO, a United Nations agency dedicated to promoting social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights, benefits from Atwoli’s extensive experience and dedication to workers’ causes.
With over two decades as Cotu SG, Atwoli sees his re-election as a reflection of the trust placed in him by workers in Kenya and beyond.
He emphasized the importance of his appointments in contributing to the governance and strategic direction of key institutions, both locally and internationally.
Atwoli pledged to continue inspiring positive change and advancing workers’ rights globally.
“As a key figure in the ongoing efforts to champion workers’ rights, social justice, and economic development,” he stated, “I will ensure that the rights and welfare of workers, globally, are upheld and respected.”
Atwoli’s re-election underscores his enduring commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and promoting social justice on the global stage.
His leadership role in international labour affairs will continue to play a significant role in shaping policies and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of workers worldwide.
