A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday night along the Narok-Mai Mahiu road in Narok County, claiming the life of a one-year-old child and leaving 14 passengers hospitalized with serious injuries.
The crash took place around 11:30 p.m. in the Pinyinyi area, when a truck collided with a matatu carrying 15 passengers.
According to police reports, the matatu was traveling towards Mai Mahiu when the truck, coming from behind, crashed into it as it struggled to ascend a hill.
The impact caused the matatu to lose control, veering off the road and rolling several times before coming to a stop.
“The matatu rolled multiple times after being hit, landing on the left side of the road,” officers from the Ntulele traffic station confirmed.
Sadly, a one-year-old child died on the spot due to the severity of the injuries.
The other 14 passengers were rushed to Narok County Referral Hospital, where they were admitted in critical condition.
The child’s body was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination, while the matatu and truck were impounded by police and taken to the Ntulele traffic base as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
Authorities are looking into whether driver fatigue or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
This incident adds to the growing number of road accidents in the region, and police are urging motorists to exercise extra caution, especially on hilly and winding sections of the Narok-Mai Mahiu road, which has seen an increase in traffic collisions.
