CBK Reports Rise in Crude Oil Prices Ahead of EPRA’s October Fuel Review

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has reported a significant increase in international crude oil prices ahead of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s (EPRA) monthly review of fuel prices scheduled for October 14, 2026.

In its weekly bulletin released on Friday, October 9, the CBK revealed that Murban crude oil, a benchmark used in Kenya’s fuel pricing calculations, rose to $101.67 (approximately KSh 13,134) per barrel on October 8.

The price represented an increase from $95.76 (about KSh 12,371) per barrel recorded on October 1.

What Is Driving the Increase in Oil Prices?

According to the CBK, the rise in crude oil prices was driven by concerns over global supplies amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The bank noted that the price of Murban crude had climbed by approximately 6% within a week, raising concerns about the potential impact on local fuel costs.

The development comes as motorists and other consumers await EPRA’s latest review, which will determine the maximum retail prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene across the country.

If international crude prices remain elevated during the assessment period, Kenyan consumers could face higher pump prices, depending on the other components of the country’s fuel pricing formula.

When Will EPRA Announce the New Fuel Prices?

EPRA is scheduled to announce revised fuel prices on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The new rates are expected to take effect on October 15 and remain in force until November 14, 2026.

Kenya’s monthly fuel pricing review takes international petroleum prices into account, making movements in crude oil benchmarks an important indicator for the local energy market.

Sustained increases in global oil prices can put upward pressure on the retail cost of petrol, diesel and kerosene, although the final prices also depend on other pricing components.

Current Fuel Prices in Nairobi

In its September review, EPRA set the maximum retail prices in Nairobi at the following rates:

  • Super petrol: KSh 214.03 per litre
  • Diesel: KSh 217.86 per litre
  • Kerosene: KSh 191.38 per litre

The prices took effect on September 15, 2026, and remained unchanged from the previous monthly review, which ended on September 14.

Motorists and businesses are now waiting for EPRA’s October announcement to establish whether the increase in international crude oil prices will translate into higher fuel costs locally.
